How I Started my Fitness Journey

Kim Kine is a chiropractor and wellness influencer from Perth, Australia. Her content is centred around health and happiness with a holistic approach to life. Incorporating regular exercise into your lifestyle can have amazing benefits not only for your physical health but for your mental health too. Starting out on your fitness journey can be tough, we know! So, we sat down with Kim to talk about her fitness inspirations, favourite ways to exercise and to see what advice she has for the CLIQUE community.

What was the initial inspiration for you to incorporate regular exercise into your lifestyle? Did it take off on your first try or were there multiple attempts?
Multiple attempts for sure! I was very active as a teen because I was a competitive dancer. I went to classes 4-5 times a week. When I quit dancing, I found it much harder to work up the motivation within myself to exercise. It’s so much easier to attend a class where someone tells you what to do!

I’ve been working out at home for the past 3-4 years. My biggest challenge is finding the motivation to continue through Winter because I get SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder)!

For those who may be just beginning their fitness journey, what are your top tips/things you wish you’d known before starting out?
Get a trainer or talk to someone who knows their stuff. They can help tailor your diet and exercise to reach your own specific goals. Also, don’t compare yourself to others, and realise that consistency is key. Change takes time, so be realistic about your expectations.

What is your favourite way to exercise and why?
I prefer to work out at home using weights and booty bands. I occasionally go to the gym with my partner, but I like being comfortable at home better! Long walks are a must as well. It’s important to get out in nature!

What are your current favorite workout jams to listen to?
Anything by Doja Cat!

How has exercise been a benefit for your mental health?
It’s a fact that improving your physical health improves your mental health. I feel happier, healthier and more confident when I exercise!

Other than exercise, what are some things that you do to remain positive, healthy and happy?
I am a huge journal person. I write almost every day, whether it be goals, random thoughts, to-do lists or things I want to manifest! I recommend writing to everyone. It’s so therapeutic and it helps to clear my mind and make decisions easier.

Another game-changer for me has been my kinesiologist! She helps me work through unresolved childhood trauma and make sense of my emotions. She integrates these changes into my body using energy work and the benefits to my physical and mental health have been remarkable.

How do you make healthy choices when it comes to food? And what are your top tips for changing ‘bad’ eating habits?
Genetically (I took a DNA test), I am intolerant to dairy and gluten. Once I knew this, making food decisions was easy, because why would I put something into my body that is going to hurt me? My diet is fairly simple. I eat gluten and dairy-free and avoid processed/packaged foods as much as possible. I don’t track calories at all. I like to have fun with food!
